SyncBackPro and SyncBackSE make use of the Volume Shadow Copy Service (often referred to as VSS) to copy open/locked files. VSS is a part of the Windows operating system. If you have used 3rd party disk imaging tools such as Acronis True Image, or any of its branded versions (e.g. Seagates Seatools), then you may get a Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) when SyncBackPro or SyncBackSE tries to use VSS to copy open/locked files.

Please keep in mind that these BSOD's are not caused by SyncBackPro/SE. They are caused by disk imaging software mis-configuring the Windows system and so causing the BSOD. It is recommended you contact the technical support for the disk imaging software that you use. However, if you cannot contact them, or they are unable or unwilling to provide a solution, we are aware of some possible solutions. Note that we cannot guarantee that these solutions will work and you must use these solutions at your own risk.

Solution 1

1. Download the latest version of MBRFix from https://download.cnet.com/MbrFix/3000-2094_4-10485990.html
2. Go to a DOS prompt (Start -> Run... -> cmd)
3. Run MbrFix /drive 0 listpartitions
4. Examine the results to make sure that the drive has the boot partition and is the size you expect. If it is not 0 (zero) then try 1 etc.
5. Make a backup copy of your current master boot record: MbrFix /drive 0 savembr BackupMbr0.bin
6. Generate a new signature: MbrFix /drive 0 generatesignature
7. Reboot Windows.
8. Windows will detect your drive as a new drive. Reboot again.

Solution 2

1. Go to windows Device Manager
2. Click "view" and select "show hidden devices"
3. Scroll down to "storage volumes"
4. Click on the plus to expand.
5. Click on each one listed and right click and uninstall. (You will get a message on some saying to reboot before it takes effect. Select no until you do them all.)
6. Reboot.
7. Wait till windows automatically reinstall devices. Will prompt to reboot again.
8. Reboot.

Solution 3

1. Run regedit from the run menu (Start -> Run...)
2. Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE-10318}
3. Export this key so you have a backup of it.
4. Delete the key UpperFilters
5. Reboot
6. After rebooting you should get a message from Windows says it has found new hardware. It will probably ask you to reboot after installing the new hardware.
7. Reboot

Solution 4

As a last resort you could configure your SyncBackPro/SE profiles not to use VSS. To do this: modify your profile, enable Expert mode, go to the Copy/Delete > Locked Files, and tick the option "Do not use the Volume Shadow Copy service (VSS) to copy open files".
